Task 1
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should be allowed to park their cars on campus. Give reasons and details to support your response. Begin your response after the beep.
Well, to be honest, I’m not really sure about my opinion. See, in Beijing, not many students have cars, so this not an issue for us. But, I guess I would have to say that students should not be allowed to park their cars on campus. The main reason I think this is because I do not think there is enough room on campuses for everybody to park their cars. It’s hard enough finding a space to park my bike, let alone to park my car. I also think prohibiting students from parking their cars on campus is a good way to promote sustainability. With no place to park on campus, students are discouraged from bringing their cars with them to school. Students are then encouraged to take public transportation instead.
Task 2
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People today do not need to worry about memorizing the dates of important historical events, because they can easily look up the dates online. Please include specific examples and details in your response. Begin your response after the beep.
While the internet is convenient to use if you forget a specific fact, I do not think it should be used as an excuse for not properly learning the timeline of history. I think not learning specific facts about history is a slippery slope. First, we do not concern ourselves with the specific date; maybe we only remember the month and year. Eventually we will use the internet as an excuse not to learn the month, and then eventually the year. In addition, I think depending on the internet and other technology so much has become a crutch in our intellectual development. What if in the future, robots take over and we lose the internet? I do not think it is wise to place such dependence in technology, especially since our minds have the capacity to easily learn and retain these details.
Task 3
Reading
Proposal: students should organize an activity every week in dormitory building.
Reason1: enhance students’ extracurricular activities
Reason2: allow students to get to know each other
Listening
Man disagrees
Reason1: students would not be free at the same time.
Reason2: students could often meet each other in the lounge, so there is no need to organize such an activity.
Task 4
Reading
Clinal variation refers to the adaptation of species to different living environments, which means their characteristics will be different according to different surroundings.
Listening
The sparrow living in the south has a small body size in order to reduce heat consumption, so that it would be able to survive in hot weather.
The sparrow living in the north, however, has a bigger body size for the purpose of storing heat to adapt to the cold weather.
Problem: The woman will go on vacation for one week, so she could not feed her pet bird.
Solutions:
The first solution is to ask her friend to help, but her friend may be very busy, plus, he lives far away from her apartment; and the second is to send her pet bird to a pet boarding for a week, but the store charges a lot and the price will be very expensive.
Task 6 two draw backs of franchise
There are two major drawbacks in franchising. First, there is little space left for the franchised restaurants to innovate. For example, franchise restaurants are generally given very detailed guidelines on how they can run their business, for example, the contents of dish menu and food prices, the marketing they engage in, the layout of their store and even their accounting practices. A failure to follow these guidelines can result in a revocation of the franchise owner's license. Second, service and performance in one franchised restaurant could easily influence others. For example if one franchised restaurant has certain hygienic problems, people may think other franchised restaurants have got the same problem.
